WSJ taps Al-Muslim to oversee internship program

Wall Street Journal assistant managing editor for talent Sarah Rabil sent out the following to the staff:

I’m very happy to announce that Aisha Al-Muslim is joining the Managing Editor’s Office on May 27 to oversee our storied internship program.

As the senior editor for newsroom internships, Aisha will help us shape the next generation of journalists. She will ensure the program continues to be a welcoming and enriching experience and attracts a diverse class of interns who bring different backgrounds, experiences and perspectives into our newsroom.

Aisha will be moving over from her position as a reporter on the WSJ Pro Bankruptcy team, and she previously was a spot news reporter on our Real-Time News Desk, as well as our resident Backstreet Boys superfan. Before joining the Journal in 2017, Aisha was a business reporter and town reporter at Newsday, where she was a 2014 Pulitzer Prize finalist for a series on police misconduct. She previously served as editor of the Spanish-language community newspaper, El Correo de Queens, and was a reporter for its sister newspaper, the Queens Courier.

She holds a master’s degree in journalism with a concentration in urban studies from CUNY and completed her undergraduate degree at Lehman College, where she majored in multilingual journalism and minored in Italian and Black studies. She is no stranger to internships, having interned at WCBS-TV, WABC-TV, People en Español, CBS Evening News’ Weekend Edition, WKBW-TV in Buffalo, New York and NY1 Noticias. Born in the Republic of Panama, Aisha is fluent in Spanish and currently lives in Brooklyn.

As a member of NABJ and NAHJ, Aisha has been an advocate for the Journal by helping with recruiting at conferences and career fairs for several years, as well as volunteering as a mentor for our Morgan State business journalism program.

In addition to overseeing the internship program, Aisha will work alongside Megan Douglass, Keiko Morris and me to support hiring, recruiting and career development across the newsroom. She’ll also work closely with the Culture, Training & Outreach team on relevant outreach programs and training support for our interns.

Chris Roush was the dean of the School of Communications at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut. He was previously Walter E. Hussman Sr. Distinguished Professor in business journalism at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is a former business journalist for Bloomberg News, Businessweek, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Tampa Tribune and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He is the author of the leading business reporting textbook "Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" and "Thinking Things Over," a biography of former Wall Street Journal editor Vermont Royster.
