WSJ senior platform editor Scott named to Trust Fellowship program

Wall Street Journal editor in chief Matt Murray sent out the following announcement on Wednesday:

Dear All,

Happy news: Senior Platform Editor Charity Scott will serve as the newsroom’s first participant in our WSJ Trust Fellowship program. Charity begins her three-month assignment on April 1.

As we shared when announcing this training initiative in January, there will be multiple exchanges of learning. Apart from attending team and individual meetings, a customized fellowship plan will involve a comprehensive look at how stories originate here, to include research, reporting, story editing, images and measurable project work that addresses accountability.

In the six years Charity has been at the Journal, she has been an ardent and outspoken champion of high journalistic standards. Her commitment to our audiences and keen understanding of the importance of diversity and inclusion have earned her trust and respect among newsroom leaders and her peers. She is sharp, passionate, insightful and candid. We couldn’t be more delighted to support her in this fellowship role.

This fellowship is one of several ways we are encouraging greater global newsroom conversations about our coverage mission, how we safeguard our trusted journalism and how we reach and grow diverse audiences. Charity will soon relocate to the hub, where she’ll interact more closely with senior editors. She also will be anchored on the standards team and will report to Deputy Editor in Chief Neal Lipschutz.

Charity’s temporary departure from the social team also presents an opportunity for someone who is interested in shaping and curating Journal storytelling on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and beyond. Chris Roush was the dean of the School of Communications at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut. He was previously Walter E. Hussman Sr. Distinguished Professor in business journalism at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is a former business journalist for Bloomberg News, Businessweek, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Tampa Tribune and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He is the author of the leading business reporting textbook "Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" and "Thinking Things Over," a biography of former Wall Street Journal editor Vermont Royster.
