We are seeking the prime editor to oversee news coverage throughout the weekend. The editor leads the organization’s first response across platforms as news breaks and oversees continuing coverage of major events for WSJ.com and the Journal, coordinating with Dow Jones Newswires.
The weekend news editor works closely with the WSJ.com team, ensuring that our more than one million paying online subscribers receive a stream of news and features that surpasses those of our competitors. He or she works directly with the bureaus and the interactive graphics, photo and video departments to provide staff coverage of weekend events. The weekend editor oversees editorial production of the print edition on on the hub on Friday evenings. He or she also tees up news and features for the Monday newspaper, identifying events and themes worthy of ongoing coverage and prominence in the paper, and giving editors and reporters a head start on delivering.
Strong candidates peferably have bureau-chief or senior-news-editor expeience and need highest-level news judgment and experience leading breaking news and feature coverage. They must be strong, fast editors who inspire the trust and contributions of reporters and editors around the world and can masterfully stitch together reporting feeds on the fly.
The weekend editor, who will report to Matt Murray and Rebecca Blumenstein, must be capable of working with a diverse team, effectively deploying diplomacy and persuasion to bring out the best contributions from others. They must be news junkies who thrive on ongoing deadlines, and be capable of creative homepage management that keeps our readers coming back for more. Familiarity with online publishing systems and strategies is a strong positive.
