WSJ, Reuters and NerdWallet among National Press Club award winners

The Wall Street Journal, Reuters and NerdWallet are among the business and financial journalism outlets that won awards in the 2018 National Press Club contest.

The Journal won the breaking news prize for its coverage of the Amazon/Whole Foods merger.

The Reuters investigative series, “Legacy of Lead,” won in the consumer journalism/newspapers category for its in-depth reporting and skilled writing, looking at lead contamination problems in counties nationwide.

NerdWallet won in the consumer journalism/periodicals category for an in-depth look at the selling of fruits and vegetables that the grower falsely claimed were organic.

The Sandy Hume Award for Excellence in Political Journalism went to Kristina Peterson of The Journal for “clever, innovative coverage” of the Capitol and government.

The Joseph D. Ryle Award for Excellence in Writing on the Problems of Geriatrics went to “What Happens When We Let Tech Take Care of Our Aging Parents,” by Lauren Smiley at Wired.

He is a former business journalist for Bloomberg News, Businessweek, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Tampa Tribune and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He is the author of the leading business reporting textbook "Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" and "Thinking Things Over," a biography of former Wall Street Journal editor Vermont Royster.
