Wall Street Journal reporter Julie Wernau has joined its health and science team.

She was expelled from China in March 2020, where she wrote about China’s consumer market for the Journal in Beijing. Since arriving back in the U.S., she has been based in Chicago and pitching in on WSJ’s coverage of everything from the killing of George Floyd — reporting on the ground in Minneapolis, Chicago and Kenosha — to COVID-19’s impact on the restaurant industry and the food supply chain.

Previously, she covered emerging markets and commodities for the Journal in New York, including distressed debt in Venezuela, Mozambique and Argentina and frozen concentrated orange juice.

Wernau came to The Journal from Chicago, where she wrote about the energy sector for the Chicago Tribune.

A native of Connecticut, Julie spent the early part of her career on the crime beat at The Day in New London and writing about her hometown of Waterford for The Waterford Times.
