Emily Steel, a reporter for The Wall Street Journal in the media and tech group, is now a social media editor at the business newspaper, where she will help shape the Journal’s strategy on Facebook, Twitter and the like.
As part of the job, Steel will will focus, at least initially, on managing and expanding the Journal’s institutional presence in social media; training and advising Journal staffers; and generating new reporting projects built for the social web. The paper’s intent is to experiment quickly with new tools, repeat what works, and share what we find with the rest of the newsroom.
Steel, a Nebraska native who graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill’s School of Journalism and Mass Communication, was part of a team of Journal reporters who won a Loeb Award last year. Julia Angwin, Scott Thurm, Christina Tsuei, Paul Antonson, Jill Kirschenbaum, Jovi Juan and Steel received the Loeb Award for “What They Know” in the online enterprise category.
Steel, who joined the paper in 2006 after an internship with the Journal, previously covered digital media and marketing. She is interested in the future of advertising.
