WSJ names Trofimov its chief foreign affairs correspondent

Yaroslav Trofimov

The Wall Street Journal has named Yaroslav Trofimov its chief foreign affairs correspondent.

Trofimov had been writing a weekly column, “Middle East Crossroads,” about the region stretching from West Africa to Pakistan.

He joined the Journal in 1999 and previously served as Rome, Middle East and Singapore-based Asia correspondent, and as bureau chief in Afghanistan and Pakistan. He is the author of two books, “Faith at War” (2005) and “Siege of Mecca” (2007).

Trofimov, who was born in the Ukraine, shared in the Overseas Press Club award for foreign reporting on India, and won the SAJA Daniel Pearl award for the outstanding story on South Asia in 2007. He also shared the SAJA award for coverage of the Mumbai bombing in 2008, among other honors.

He worked for Bloomberg News for two years covering Italian corporate news from 1997 to 1999. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Kiev National Economics University and a master’s degree in journalism from New York University.

He is a former business journalist for Bloomberg News, Businessweek, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Tampa Tribune and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He is the author of the leading business reporting textbook "Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" and "Thinking Things Over," a biography of former Wall Street Journal editor Vermont Royster.
