WSJ names Terlep its investigative/enterprise sports reporter

Wall Street Journal sports editor Sam Walker sent out the following staff announcement on Tuesday:

I’m thrilled to announce that Sharon Terlep has joined the global sports desk as an investigative and enterprise reporter.

In her new role, Sharon will work on long-lead investigative projects and write profiles of the biggest newsmakers. She’ll dive into major stories and scandals and mine them for those classic Journal angles. Sharon will also join our Olympic coverage team—she’ll be heading to Sochi this February to help cover the Winter Games.

Sharon grew up near Detroit and received a journalism degree from Michigan State. She started her newspaper career at the Lansing State Journal covering higher ed, moved to the Detroit News in 2005 to cover health care and joined Dow Jones Newswires in 2008 to cover General Motors. She began covering GM for the Journal’s combined bureau in 2010 and in doing so, put on a clinic in how to dominate a corporate beat. She moved to New York in 2012 to join the paper’s high-powered M&A team.

An accomplished athlete (she prefers the word persistent), Sharon has run four marathons and been a member of two of Chaz Repak’s now-legendary overnight, 100-mile-plus relay teams. She played soccer in high school—but only because she was cut from the basketball team for excessive fouling. A lifelong Michigan sports fan, Sharon has allegiances to the Tigers, Pistons, Red Wings and above all else—the Spartans.
