WSJ names photo director, hires deputy photo director

Jessica Yu, global visuals editor at The Wall Street Journal, sent out the following announcement to the staff:

We are thrilled to make two photo department staff announcements that are crucial in our ongoing and vital drive to ramp up the power and impact of our visual journalism across all Journal platforms.

Lucy Gilmour is named The Wall Street Journal’s Director of Photography.

Lucy joined The Wall Street Journal family in 2008 as the Photo Director for the launch of WSJ. magazine. There she was instrumental in establishing the strong, elegant visual aesthetic that has led the publication to the top of the pack in the luxury magazine space.

She repeated her success by overseeing the launches of the Off Duty and Review sections, raising the quality of feature photography in the organization to new levels. Lucy was subsequently named Deputy Director of Photography, looking after all of WSJ’s feature photography efforts. Recently, Lucy has been serving as the department’s interim director and working closely with the Journal’s veteran team of news photo editors. She has already taken the lead on numerous initiatives, such as developing our procedures to safeguard photographers in danger zones and locking down proper attribution for our massive intake of photos.

Lucy’s career began in the Paris office of Conde Nast Traveler, where she produced shoots for photographers Philip-Lorca diCorcia, Hakan Ludwigson, Helmut Newton, Brigitte Lacombe and Robert Polidori, among others. She went on to become Picture Editor at The New Yorker, managing the assigning team and introducing the pairing of fiction with fine-art photography at the weekly. Lucy then moved to House & Garden as Photography Director, overseeing the luxury magazine’s historic 100-year anniversary before joining the Journal.

She has led teams to win numerous Society of News Design awards and receive multiple nominations for the prestigious National Magazine Awards.

Lucy remains one credit shy of her horticultural certificate from the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens.

Anna Dickson, Photo Director of The Huffington Post, will join us as WSJ’s new Deputy Director of Photography.

Anna joined The Huffington Post in 2012 to help launch its weekly iPad magazine. She was subsequently named Photo Director of The Huffington Post—which boasts 126 million monthly unique visitors and 85,000 contributing bloggers. Anna has spent the last three years managing the Huffington Post newsroom photo department in addition to overseeing all photography operations for The Huffington Post and AOL properties.

During her tenure, The Huffington Post has won numerous National Press Photography Association Awards, including one for their coverage of Hurricane Sandy and the Supreme Court ruling on same-sex marriage. She has also introduced several products into the newsroom to amplify search and rights acquisitions for social and mobile photography.

Anna is well-versed in the ever-changing landscape of photography, especially as it pertains to digital, mobile and social. At The Huffington Post, she created relationships with various up-and-coming photo communities such as 500px, EyeEm and Snapwire. She also grew a large and vibrant community for The Huffington Post via more “traditional” means such as Instagram, Facebook and Twitter, as well as the site directly. She is an active participant in the digital and photo journalism communities, speaking about the impact of technology on photography at various conferences in the U.S and abroad, including SxSW, the Palm Springs Photo Festival, the EyeEm Festival and the Visual Revolution Conference.

Anna started her photo-editing career at Netscape in 2004. She moved a year later to New York where she worked at publications such as Future Music, Rolling Stone and Popular Photography. She returned to a pure digital play with iHeartRadio, where she oversaw 850 websites and large scale events including the iHeartRadio Music festival.

When not in the newsroom, Anna can be found on an urban soccer field competing in various leagues throughout the city.

Lucy and Anna will jointly look after both news and features photography at The Journal. Please join us in congratulating them on their new roles.

Chris Roush was the dean of the School of Communications at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut. He was previously Walter E. Hussman Sr. Distinguished Professor in business journalism at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is a former business journalist for Bloomberg News, Businessweek, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Tampa Tribune and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He is the author of the leading business reporting textbook "Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" and "Thinking Things Over," a biography of former Wall Street Journal editor Vermont Royster.
