WSJ names new day editor

Wall Street Journal managing editor Robert Thomson sent out the following announcement on Thursday afternoon:

We are delighted to announce that Bill “Thermal” Power will be promoted to Day Editor, replacing the irreplaceable Yvonne Dennis. The move puts Bill at the very heart of our paper at The Pod, which is the subdivision of The Hub overseen by Ann Podd. Bill has been editing since grammar school when he started a typewritten, mail-delivered newspaper for his extended family. His concept of the extended family has continued to expand, and now includes the 33 million unique visitors we get each month to WSJ.com.

Bill graduated from Fordham University at Lincoln Center in 1984 and joined the WSJ later that year on the old Monitor Desk. He worked his way up to reporter, covering commodities, stocks and then Wall Street. He then joined the old National News Desk and served a stint as a Money & Investing bureau editor. He returned to the News Desk in mid-2001 when C1 was preparing to introduce color, approximately 35 years after color television became popular in the US. He has run the Markets editing desk since its formation.

Bill is the drummer in the WSJ house band, the Six Stars, and is now lead guitarist in Ann’s ensemble, which is punctual and mellifluous in its performances every evening. He lives in Yardley, Pa., with his wife and two daughters. We wish Bill the very best in his new post.
