WSJ names new chief economics correspondent

Jon Hilsenrath has been named the new chief economics correspondent at The Wall Street Journal, according to an internal memo.

He replaces Greg Ip, who went to The Economist.

Economics editor Dave Wessel wrote, “We’re pleased to share the news that Jon Hilsenrath is joining the global economics bureau as chief economics correspondent, to be based in Washington.  Working closely with Sudeep Reddy, Jon will be responsible for covering the Federal Reserve at a time when its
importance to our readers is more evident than ever.  In cooperation with reporters in the economics and other bureaus, Jon also will cover major developments in the U.S. and global economies for all print and
on-line editions of The Wall Street Journal and contribute to WSJ.com’s popular Real Time Economics site.

“Jon is particularly well equipped for this important assignment. He has, most recently, been overseeing coverage of financial markets as Markets Editor in the Money & Investing section.  Before taking that job, he did stints as an economics reporter in New York and in Hong Kong.  Before joining the Journal in 1997, he was senior financial correspondent for Knight-Ridder in Washington. Jon appears frequently on CNBC.

“Jon has both an MBA and a master’s in journalism from Columbia, where he was a Knight-Bagehot Fellow. He earned a B.A. in political science at Duke University where he was a wrestler, which should serve him well working with Wessel.

“Jon will assume his new responsibilities on Aug. 18. Please join us in congratulating him as he takes on this exciting new assignment.”
