Andrew Dowell, editor for Asia Pacific for The Wall Street Journal, sent out the following announcement to the staff:
I’m pleased to announce two important new postings for our Asia finance team.
Julie Steinberg is now our Asia M&A reporter. She is a dogged fact-finder and has been well prepared for the role by her two years covering investment banks in Hong Kong. Julie previously worked as a banking reporter for the Journal in New York. Her stories on loopholes in securities laws led to actions by state lawmakers and industry bodies to close them, and she and a colleague won a Sabew award for their coverage of brokerage firm MF Global’s implosion. A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, Julie was born in Canada but grew up in the U.S., setting off a lifetime of agonizing soul-searching during the Olympics.
Chuin-Wei Yap is now covering Asia banking and money flows. He will have broad responsibility for the industry, with a special focus on fintech companies like Ant Financial. Chiun-Wei will soon relocate to Hong Kong from the Beijing bureau after a long run covering China’s banks and economy. A native of Singapore, Chuin-Wei began his career with Dow Jones in 2008 as reporter covering commodities. He speaks and reads Mandarin and has degrees in modern history from Oxford University and international affairs from Columbia University.
Please join me in welcoming Julie and Chiun-Wei to their new jobs.
