WSJ names Layer its print editor

Wall Street Journal editor Gerard Baker sent out the following announcement on Tuesday:

I am delighted to announce that Tim Layer is named Print Editor, overseeing the team that edits, produces and assembles The Wall Street Journal newspaper.

In this central role, Tim’s mandate is to ensure the continued vitality and importance of the Journal in print, which reaches a million subscribers a day and is considered the most credible source of news and information in print daily. His task is to further enhance the content, presentation and production of our print product as an essential digest of what our readers need to know each day and as a complement to our digital news products.

Tim will work closely with other editors within our central newsroom structure and will report to Jason Anders, Chief News Editor.

Tim brings to his role extensive experience at Dow Jones that stretches over 28 years, including the past 1 1/2-plus years as deputy Print Editor. Before that he was U.S. News deputy editor and deputy of the Money & Investing editing desk. In the mid-2000s he temporarily left the Journal for 6 1/2 years to run his own niche publishing company. Prior to that, he was the Journal’s bureau chief for commercial real estate and in the late 1990s was national technology and health editor. Before that, Tim was news editor in the Dow Jones Multimedia group and was part of a team that launched the world’s first financial news service to stream live audio on the Web back in the mid 1990s.

Tim spent four years on overseas assignment in Brussels as Money & Markets Editor and then Deputy Managing Editor of The Wall Street Journal Europe. He had various roles on the national news desk, including night news editor, through the late 1980s and started out as a copyreader on the Journal’s Monitor Desk. Tim holds a degree in Journalism from New York University. He has three children and one recent granddaughter. In his spare time, he plays guitar in the WSJ’s Six Stars band.

Please join me in congratulating Tim on his new role.
