Wall Street Journal DC bureau chief Paul Beckett sent out the following announcement on Tuesday:
All: I am delighted to announce that Nell Henderson is named Economic Editor of The Wall Street Journal, effective immediately.
Nell will lead our national and global economics coverage with a view to ensuring that we are dominating a core area for our WSJ and professional subscribers as well as sharpening our digital and visual storytelling. She will coordinate closely with US News and international bureaus so that we can continue to offer readers an insightful and broad understanding of the forces shaping the global economy. She will also continue to supervise our coverage of the Federal Reserve and its interactions with global central banks. And she will shape our economic policy coverage — from taxes to labor trends to new voices in economic academics — that have long distinguished the Journal as a must-read in these important areas.
Nell joined the Journal in 2011 to oversee our coverage of the Federal Reserve, federal budget, the IMF and World Bank, taxes and other policy areas. Since 2013, she has been the Journal’s Global Central Banking Editor, launching and initially managing WSJ Pro Central Banking, including its daily email newsletter, digital tools, membership events, video and news alerts.
Before coming to the Journal, Nell spent three years as a senior editor at the McKinsey Global Institute, the consulting firm’s economic research arm, and 23 years at the Washington Post, including four years as National Economics Reporter and seven years as Economics Editor. She earned a B.A. cum laude from Harvard University and a Diploma in Economics at the London School of Economics. She taught economic journalism in Spanish as a Fulbright Fellow in Peru and Bolivia in 1990 and served as a volunteer journalism instructor in the Washington, D.C. school system in 1990.
