The following announcement was sent out Wednesday by Wall Street Journal managing editor Robert Thomson:
“Mike Allen will be taking on the new position of Page One Projects Editor. In this role, Mike will work with bureaus to nurture investigations and other longer-term stories for the paper. While we necessarily have a strong focus on news, we must also develop great investigative journalism, which is expected of all of our reporters around the world.
“Alex Martin will become Deputy Editor, succeeding Mike. In his new role, Alex will work closely with Mike Williams in running Page One: vetting (short) proposals; managing the editing of leders, extras and aheds; and supervising the daily evolution of the page.
“In his 22 years at the Journal, Mike has reported on conflict in Central America, the Texas banking massacre, and the finer arts of money laundering. He has served as Latin America bureau chief, assistant foreign editor and was a founding editor of Texas Journal.
“Alex joined the Journal as deputy Marketplace editor in 2005 from Newsday, where he was an assistant managing editor, at various times, for investigations, features and Long Island. He helped guide Pulitzer-winning coverage of the crash of TWA Flight 800. Alex started his career at the St. Francisville (La.) Democrat and spent eight years at the Times-Picayune in his hometown of New Orleans.
“Please begin coding in Alex on story proposals, finished stories and housekeeping notes, in addition to coding in Mike W. and Mike A.”
