WSJ hires reporter from Atlanta paper

Cameron McWhirter, an enterprise and watchdog reporter for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, has been hired to work for the Wall Street Journal, multiple sources have confirmed.

McWhirter, who will be based in the Atlanta bureau, replaces Corey Dade, who left the Journal for National Public Radio.

McWhirter is best known in business journalism circles has being part of the reporting team at the Cincinnati Enquirer that wrote about Chiquita Brands International in 1998. The paper later retracted the series and fired the other reporter involved in the stories for breaking into the company’s phone message system, but McWhirter did nothing wrong and has had a significant career in journalism.

McWhirter is the author of “Red Summer:The Summer of 1919 and the Awakening of Black America,” a book he conceived while a Neiman fellow in 2007.

McWhirter is a graduate of Hamilton College and Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism.  In addition to the Enquirer and the Journal-Constitution, he has also worked for the Detroit News, the Chicago Tribune and the Gannett suburban newspapers.
