WSJ hires Mead to write opinion column

Walter Russell Mead

Walter Russell Mead will become a columnist for the Wall Street Journal opinion pages, writing the weekly Global View column on foreign affairs.

He will start on Feb. 6.

Walter is a highly regarded journalist and historian of American foreign policy with a unique voice at a time of new and growing challenges to global order,” said Journal editorial page editor Paul Gigot in a statement. “I’m delighted that he will help our readers make sense of the political, economic and technological forces reshaping the world in the U.S. and abroad.”

Mead has been writing for the Journal on a biweekly basis for nearly a year. He is the James Clarke Chace Professor of Foreign Affairs and Humanities at Bard College and previously taught American foreign policy at Yale University.

He was editor at large of the American Interest magazine and is a Distinguished Scholar at the Hudson Institute. He is also the author of several books, including the award-winning “Special Providence: American Foreign Policy and How it Changed the World” in 2001.

Chris Roush

Chris Roush was the dean of the School of Communications at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut. He was previously Walter E. Hussman Sr. Distinguished Professor in business journalism at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is a former business journalist for Bloomberg News, Businessweek, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Tampa Tribune and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He is the author of the leading business reporting textbook "Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" and "Thinking Things Over," a biography of former Wall Street Journal editor Vermont Royster.
