Wall Street Journal editor Matt Murray sent out the following announcement on Tuesday:
Dear All:
I’m delighted to share the news that Anthony Galloway, an Emmy-winning digital media executive and broadcast news producer, is joining our newsroom as Global Head of Video and Audio. Anthony will be building on the fantastic journalism the team produces now, working to extend video’s reach into and across the newsroom and finding new ways to drive audiences and storytelling experiences. He starts next Monday, July 23.
Anthony brings more than 15 years of experience in video. He joins us from Condé Nast Entertainment, where as vice president of digital video programming he partnered with print editors, digital directors, video and strategy teams to produce digital video content inspired by Condé Nast publications. Before that, Anthony was executive producer of mobile content at VICE Media, developing new daily and recurring video series for mobile, digital and social platforms. In that role, Anthony worked with a team to create VICE’s first daily digital show, Daily VICE, and launched new series for VICE’s eight primary verticals.
Anthony had a 15-year career at NBC News, where he held multiple roles, including serving as a supervising producer working closely with journalist Ann Curry on global news and prime time documentary reports. At NBC News, Anthony launched a digital-first video site for the news show Rock Center with Brian Williams, worked with product teams to create new digital platforms and managed all digital and social media for the prime time news unit. Anthony also served as a producer for NBC Nightly News, Dateline and the Today show. In 2010, he won a national Emmy Award for his contribution to NBC’s breaking news coverage of the crash of U.S. Airways flight 1549, which came to be known as the miracle on the Hudson. He is a graduate of the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School of Journalism.
There was wide interest in the position, and in the exciting work being done by the Journal in video and audio. Anthony will be a great fit. These are areas that are priorities for the Journal and Dow Jones. We plan to expand the team in coming months as part of an initiative that was recently approved for the FY19 budget.
I am grateful to the entire Video/Audio team for their commitment to their work and the Journal, especially over the past few months. We are extremely fortunate that two terrific leaders and journalists, Jarrard Cole and Joanna Stern, helmed the department during the transition and search process. They ran the group with grace, intelligence and drive, and will remain key leaders in video and the newsroom at large. I’m grateful to them both.
Anthony will report to me. Please join me in welcoming him to the Journal and doing all that you can to help him settle in quickly. Our newsroom has a lot more exciting video and audio work to do together, and I know we’re all eager to step on the gas.
Matt
