Daily News political reporter Mara Gay has been hired by The Wall Street Journal to cover politics for their Greater New York section.
Azi Paybarah of Capital New York writes, “The hiring is a return to News Corp. for Gay, a well respected reporter (and one of a relatively small number of women of color devoted to covering New York politics) who has only been at the Daily News for three months.
“Before the News hired her she was freelancing for the News Corp.-owned Journal, and until it folded in late 2012 she worked for The Daily, News Corp.’s tablet-only publication.
“At the Daily, Gay broke the story about the first person in the country released from prison based on a wrongful arson conviction. The science used to prove arson convictions has come under scrutiny following the execution of Cameron Todd Willingham in Texas, which the New Yorker wrote about in 2009.
“Gay is expected to start at the Journal on Nov. 11, a week after the mayoral election.”
