WSJ Europe names new editors, staffers

The Wall Street Journal expanded its European-based news staff with the appointment of key editors, including Iain Martin as deputy editor, reporting to editor-in-chief Patience Wheatcroft.

“Each of these new editors will help add another level of depth and breadth to our content, and provide even tighter integration between print and online,” said Wheatcroft in a statement. “Our loyal readers in Europe continue to benefit from the unrivaled pool of reporting talent Dow Jones has around the globe — including more than 400 news staff in Europe alone — and the world-leading coverage it provides across all our platforms.”

As part of his new London-based role, which is effective immediately, Martin will write a weekly European political analysis column and blog which will run in The Wall Street Journal Europe and online at europe.WSJ.com. He will also oversee the development of Weekend Journal, the Journal Europe’s lifestyle and arts section published on Fridays.

Martin was formerly head of comment at the Telegraph Group and prior to that, group executive editor and deputy editor of The Sunday Telegraph. Before joining the Telegraph in 2006, Martin was editor of The Scotsman, as well as its sister publication, Scotland on Sunday.

Other appointments in London include:

  • Tim Hanrahan, who was formerly WSJ.com day editor in New York, will be responsible for developing the Journal Europe’s news output across print and Web.
  • Jennifer Hicks, who formerly oversaw the WSJ.com night desk in New York, will be responsible for the continued expansion of europe.WSJ.com, reporting to editor Neil McIntosh, and will take charge of specific development projects for the site.
  • Ben Wright becomes executive editor of the newly-created Europe Special Reports, responsible for creating reports for Dow Jones’ publications in Europe, including The Wall Street Journal Europe and Financial News; the UK-based title covering the investment banking, securities and fund management industry. He will oversee the new calendar of reports for The Wall Street Journal Europe, working closely with the US-based Special Reports team, while continuing to oversee Financial News reports. Wright was previously managing editor of Business Publishing for Financial News, responsible for producing all of its features, supplements and research reports. He will continue to be based in London and will report to Wheatcroft.
