Nat Ives of Advertising Age reports that Chris Mitchell, who has been the publisher of Wired for less than a year, is leaving to become publisher of Conde Nast Traveler.
Ives writes, “Mr. Mitchell succeeds Lisa Hughes at Traveler; she was named to take over The New Yorker on Feb. 5. In addition to the new vacancy atop Wired, which Conde said it won’t fill this week, there’s a decision pending on the top job at Parade magazine, a Conde sibling within the Advance Publications Group. Candidates for that post include Richard Beckman, president of the Conde Nast Media Group.
“In his brief reign at Wired, Mr. Mitchell pushed to make the title more appealing to luxury and fashion advertisers beyond its core business and technology customers, saying Wired should project ‘less belt holster, more iPhone.’
“Last year was terrible for magazine publishers across the industry, and Conde was no exception. Ad pages fell 12.5% at Wired, 11.2% at Traveler and 26.8% at The New Yorker.”
