Winston-Salem paper joins those cutting stock listings

The Winston-Salem Journal newspaper joined the long list of newspapers cutting its stock listings. The Media General paper announced the cuts in its Thursday paper.

Another Media General paper, the Richmond Times-Dispatch, announced a similar cut earlier this month, and the nearby Greensboro News & Record had also cut its stock listings earlier this year.

Business editor Jane Seccombe wrote, “The Journal will replace its Tuesday through Saturday tables with a one-page package called The Numbers. Readers will still have access to up-to-date general stocks and mutual-fund information, as well as other interactive market tools, at JournalNow.com.

“Another change will take place on the advertising side – Help Wanted ads will move to the back of the business section Tuesdays through Saturdays. On Sundays, Mondays, and days after holidays when the stock market is closed, Help Wanted ads will be in the main classified section.

“The Journal joins a growing number of newspapers that are moving their general stocks and mutual-fund listings to other platforms and reducing the financial information they print to cut costs and provide more compelling service.

“‘While we understand that some readers still rely on the listings in the newspaper to check a stock or fund price, most have abandoned them in favor of the Internet,’ said Carl Crothers, the Journal’s executive editor. ‘This has greatly diminished the value of newspaper stock pages. We think our new market-analysis page will provide far and away more utility to more people.'”
