Wichita Eagle biz editor leaving journalism for teaching job

TALKING BIZ NEWS EXCLUSIVE

Dan Loving, who has been the business editor at the Wichita Eagle for the past three years, is leaving the paper at the end of this month and taking a teaching job with the local school system.

Loving has accepted a teaching position at Maize High School, which is in a Wichita suburb.

“I’ve been thinking about teaching as a new career for quite a while when this opportunity came up,” Loving told Talking Biz News. “The teacher who had been there for 20ish years retired. Kansas has a great program that allows professionals to teach in their area of expertise as they pursue certification. So I will go to school for the next three years or so as I teach and will come out the other side with a Masters in Education.

“It’s a great school district. And my boys, who are entering sixth and fourth grades, will go to that high school.”

Originally from the Kansas City area, Loving graduated from Missouri State University with a degree in communications in 1992.

He began his career at the Springfield (Mo.) News-Leader while in college. Loving moved on to newspapers in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. He came to The Eagle 15 years ago and was previously the assistant business editor. He also worked in sports.

A replacement has not been named yet.

Chris Roush

Chris Roush was the dean of the School of Communications at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut. He was previously Walter E. Hussman Sr. Distinguished Professor in business journalism at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is a former business journalist for Bloomberg News, Businessweek, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Tampa Tribune and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He is the author of the leading business reporting textbook "Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" and "Thinking Things Over," a biography of former Wall Street Journal editor Vermont Royster.
