Weissmann hired by Slate to write MoneyBox

David Plotz, the editor of Slate.com, sent out the following announcement to the staff on Wednesday:

Jessica Winter and I are delighted to announce that we’ve hired Jordan Weissmann to succeed Matt at Moneybox. Jordan is currently a Senior Associate Editor at the Atlantic, a confusing title since he doesn’t seem to associate or to edit. Instead he writes fantastic pieces about the economy, the labor market, inequality, unemployment, and education. Read them here. http://www.theatlantic.com/jordan-weissmann/

Jordan will be working in SlateNY, and  starting on March 3, so we’ll have no gap between him and Matt. Jordan won’t be doing exactly what Matt did: He’ll focus on pieces and probably won’t blog, but we’re looking forward to the same astonishing level of intellectual acuity, curiosity, and fun that we’ve enjoyed during the Yglesias years.

We’re still hunting for at least one more writer for the business section, and possibly two, so please send Jessica your nominations.

In the meantime, please welcome Jordan. And Jordan, please continue a Slate tradition by telling us a little bit about yourself.

Chris Roush

Chris Roush was the dean of the School of Communications at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut. He was previously Walter E. Hussman Sr. Distinguished Professor in business journalism at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is a former business journalist for Bloomberg News, Businessweek, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Tampa Tribune and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He is the author of the leading business reporting textbook "Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" and "Thinking Things Over," a biography of former Wall Street Journal editor Vermont Royster.

  • Jordan Weissman was a poor hire. He is out of control with his out of touch articles. He makes Slate useless because no one believes his articles.

    • I agree. Weissman is a condescending know-it-all. He's frequently uninformed, cobbles his pieces together based on sweeping generalization, conjecture and personal opinion. Useless.
