Washington Post’s Heath retiring after 31 years at the paper

Thomas Heath, a local business reporter and columnist for The Washington Post, is retiring after 31 years at the paper.

His last day is Wednesday, June 30.

Heath writes about entrepreneurs and various companies big and small in the Washington metropolitan area.

Previously, he wrote about the business of sports for The Washington Post’s sports section for most of a decade. He has also covered local news, including the Maryland General Assembly and investigative work in Fairfax County.

He has served as a correspondent for Newsweek and The Post, participating in coverage of the Oklahoma City bombing, the Unabomber and the O.J. Simpson trial.

Heath was born and raised in Syracuse, N.Y. He is a graduate of Fordham University and was a 2001-2002 fellow at Columbia University’s Knight-Bagehot business fellowship program.

Chris Roush was the dean of the School of Communications at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut. He was previously Walter E. Hussman Sr. Distinguished Professor in business journalism at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is a former business journalist for Bloomberg News, Businessweek, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Tampa Tribune and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He is the author of the leading business reporting textbook "Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" and "Thinking Things Over," a biography of former Wall Street Journal editor Vermont Royster.
