Washington Post hires Sorcher to help launch tech and cybersecurity/defense newsletters

Washington Post national editor Steven Ginsberg and PowerPost editor Rachel Van Dongen sent out the following announcement on Friday morning.

We are very excited to announce that Sara Sorcher is joining The Washington Post as deputy editor of PowerPost, where she will help launch new technology and cybersecurity/defense newsletters and build on the success of the “202” franchise.

Sara comes to us from USA Today, where she served as White House editor. Sara led coverage of many major news events, including federal indictments of associates of President Trump and the declassification of 3,000 files related to the JFK assassination.

Previously, Sara was deputy editor and cofounder of Passcode, a unit of The Christian Science Monitor covering cybersecurity and privacy. Sara helped build the section from the ground up and spearheaded its flagship editorial products, including its newsletter, podcast and Influencers Poll. Before that, Sara was National Journal’s national security correspondent. She won the National Press Club’s Michael Dornheim Award in 2014 for her articles on how political gridlock and shrinking budgets hurt the defense and aerospace industry. She also launched NJ’s “Early Bird,” an early morning newsletter popular within Washington’s defense community.

Sara began her career as a freelance journalist in Israel, the West Bank and Gaza. Her print and video stories were featured in outlets including ABC News, The New York Times, TIME and GlobalPost. Sara graduated from Tufts University with a Middle Eastern Studies degree and speaks Hebrew and Arabic. She lives in Shaw with her fiancé and their rescue pup Stella.
