Washington Post hires De Vynck as AI/algorithms reporter

Washington Post business editor David Cho and technology editor Christina Passariello sent out the following message on Wednesday:

We are excited to announce Gerrit De Vynck is joining The Washington Post as our AI and algorithms reporter, based in San Francisco. Gerrit will focus on telling the story of Google and its parent, Alphabet, and the power of algorithms.

Gerrit comes to The Post after seven years at Bloomberg News, where he most recently covered Google, helping to explain the company’s rise to dominance, how it shapes the Web and the increasingly tense battle it is waging with lawmakers and regulators around the world. Before that, he wrote about start-ups, tech policy, telecommunications and a range of other tech and business topics, first as a reporter in Bloomberg’s Toronto bureau and then in New York City.

Born in South Africa, Gerrit immigrated to Canada with his family as a child and grew up in British Columbia. He went east for college at Carleton University in Ottawa, where he graduated in 2013 with a combined degree in journalism and global politics, and has stayed east ever since, so he’s excited to be returning to the “best coast,” as he put it.

Please join us in welcoming Gerrit, whose first day is Jan. 4.
