WaPo’s Capital Business hires new reporter

Dan Beyers, Capital Business editor, sent out the following announcement on Wednesday:

We are excited to announce that Amrita Jayakumar will be joining Capital Business to cover government contracting.

Amrita joined the Financial Desk as a summer reporting intern in 2012 and she stayed on as a Web producer, writing about retail, housing and general business news. We were impressed by her versatility. In addition to chronicling the latest in cyber breaches at giant retailers, she’s kept tabs on a gyrating housing market and told us how to find love on smart phones. She explained the business behind those curated gift packages that arrive monthly in the mail, and more recently, she’s found lively ways to write about defense earnings and a merger of local rocket companies.

Before coming to The Post, Amrita interned at the Miami Herald and the United Nations. She has a master’s degree from the Missouri School of Journalism and an engineering degree from SNDT University in her hometown of Mumbai, India. In her spare time, she enjoys amateur astronomy, exploring D.C., and watching soccer.

Amrita’s first day in Capital Business will be May 19.
