WaPo assistant biz editor joins NY Times

Alex MacCallum, the assistant managing editor of audience development at the New York Times, sent out the following announcement:

Ryan McCarthy is joining our audience development team.

Ryan was an assistant business editor at The Washington Post, where he helped guide the section’s digital coverage and strategy. He spent time editing the policy vertical Wonkblog, helped reorient the section’s lines of reporting, and launched and edited Storyline, a storytelling project, which used narrative and data journalism to explore national policy topics.

Previously, Ryan was the deputy editor of Reuters.com, where he helped with the redesign of the news service’s site, the overhaul of its content management system, and co-edited the Counterparties financial blog with Felix Salmon. Before joining Reuters, Ryan was the business editor at The Huffington Post from 2009 to 2011, where he built the section’s staff and edited HuffPost’s coverage of financial reform and the post-crisis economy.

He’s a long-suffering Knicks/Mets fan, a lifelong reader of The Times, and a passionate advocate for using digital tools and platforms in the service of impactful journalism.
