Greg Roumeliotis, corporate finance and deals editor at Reuters, sent out the following announcement on Monday:
I’m excited to announce that Echo Wang has joined the deals team in New York to cover cross-border M&A and investments, with a focus on Chinese money. Chinese dealmaking is coming under intense U.S. scrutiny over technology transfers, information security and trade imbalances, and Echo has already been helping us score big wins in this key part of the file. In the limited time she worked with us this year as an intern, she was part of the team that broke news on the U.S. pushing Grindr’s Chinese owner to sell the gay dating app, and led our reporting that revealed how Beijing-based engineers got access to Grindr’s database. She was also part of the team that revealed how Goldman Sachs used a private equity fund to invest Chinese state money in a California-based industrial company, even after heightened scrutiny from Washington all but stopped U.S.-China deals last year. Echo started her career as a journalist in Shanghai six years ago, helping cover Chinese politics for France’s Le Monde. She went on to work as a news researcher for Germany’s Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung in Shanghai, covering China’s stock market crash in 2015, the rapid growth of the country’s technology sector, and Chinese investments in the West. A Shanghai International Studies University graduate, Echo came to New York in 2017 to study journalism at Columbia, and also worked for The Indicator, NPR Planet Money’s flagship daily business and economics podcast. In her spare time, Echo enjoys hiking and bouldering. She will be back in New York later this month following a trip to China.
