Virginian-Pilot reporter wins top real estate journalism award

The National Association of Real Estate Editors announced the winners of its 65th Annual Journalism Awards Competition, recognizing excellence in reporting, writing and editing stories about residential and commercial real estate.

Sarah Kleiner Varble, The Virginian-Pilot, received NAREE’s Platinum Award for Best Individual Entry.

Andrea Brambila of Inman News was the Gold Award Winner of the Ruth Ryon Award for Best Young Journalist for journalists 30 years old and younger. Ashley Gurbal Kritzer, Tampa Bay Business Journal, won the Silver Award in the Young Journalist category. The Bronze Award went to Cory Weinberg.

The President’s Gold Award for Best Freelance Collection went to Julie Satow, a freelance writer whose work appeared in The New York Times. Ken Harney, a freelancer for the Washington Post Writers Group and Inman News, earned the Silver Award for his freelance work and Camila McLaughlin, Unique Homes and New Home Source, took the Bronze.

NAREE presented the awards at its 49th Annual Real Estate Journalism Conference at the Intercontinental Hotel in Miami.

A panel of expert judges from the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University selected all award winners. Professor Emeritus Patrick S. Washburn, a former news reporter and editor, chaired the panel.

Chris Roush was the dean of the School of Communications at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut. He was previously Walter E. Hussman Sr. Distinguished Professor in business journalism at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is a former business journalist for Bloomberg News, Businessweek, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Tampa Tribune and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He is the author of the leading business reporting textbook "Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" and "Thinking Things Over," a biography of former Wall Street Journal editor Vermont Royster.
