Vella, Time’s business editor, promoted to AME

Matt Vella, who joined Time magazine a year ago as the senior editor responsible for business coverage across all platforms, has been promoted to assistant managing editor, according to a message to the staff from managing editor Nancy Gibbs.

Gibbs writes:

Matt Vella joined us a year ago to lead business and tech coverage across all our platforms, and that coverage quickly became a model for our integration, with traffic to both verticals up exponentially since Matt took the reins. From shepherding breaking news coverage to bylining his first cover story with Lev Grossman on wearable tech to presiding over major projects like the recent Answers Issue, Matt has injected his sophisticated, smart sensibility into all areas of TIME. In his new role, Matt will oversee an expanded business and technology unit and develop new features for digital and print. Matt joined us from Fortune and has worked at AOL and Out. A native of France and the U.S., he started his career in journalism in the Paris bureau of Businessweek. He is proud to follow in Michael Duffy‘s footsteps as a graduate of Oberlin College, where he studied Philosophy.

Vella had been with Fortune since July 2011, editing its technology section and leading daily tech, innovation and autos coverage on Fortune.com. Vella worked at BusinessWeek from 2007 to 2009 as a reporter in the innovation and design section, Before that, he worked briefly for The Wall Street Journal’s online operation and as a reporter writing features and spot news for BusinessWeek.com.
