Digital news veteran William Earl has joined Variety.com as editor.
In this position, he will be overseeing online editorial operations for the entertainment business news brand.
The appointment reflects Variety’s expanding digital activities beyond its core focus on breaking news and industry analysis to encompass video, podcasts and data-driven content powered by subscription platforms.
Earl will be reporting to Cynthia Littleton, Variety interim editor-in-chief.

Previously, Earl worked as director of digital development at Variety’s parent company, Penske Media Corporation (PMC).
Earl has also worked as a digital director at IndieWire, managing all editorial content and performing other tasks as well. He doubled traffic to 11.2 million monthly pageviews within two months.
He was also senior digital editor of PMC brands and has worked as an executive editor at Hollywood Life, as well as an account executive at Vision Global Marketing.
He has also interned and worked freelance at The Maine Switch.
Earl is a B.A. in journalism and political science from Ithaca College.
