Vancouver paper gets third biz editor this year

June 24, 2010

Courtney Sherwood has been named the business editor at The Columbian, the daily newspaper in Vancouver, Wash. She is the paper’s third business editor so far this year.

Sherwood, a Grinnell College graduate, has been a business reporter for most of her 10 years in journalism, including a previous three-year stint at The Columbian. About 14 months ago, she left the paper to join the reporting staff of the Portland Business Journal. Now she’s returning to The Columbian to edit both the business and features sections.

These sections have had more than their fare share of management turnover so far this year. After Julia Anderson retired as editor of The Columbian’s business section in February, longtime features editor Elisa Williams briefly edited both features and business. The paper decided to put one editor in charge of both departments so that it could hire a new reporter.

With the addition of Aaron Corvin in May,  The Columbian now has three business reporters. The others are Cami Joner and Libby Tucker.

Williams joined Oregon Health & Science University’s communications team earlier this month.

Sherwood said: “In the business section, I plan to look closely at our current beat structure to make sure that our priorities reflect the work force and the economy of the community we serve. I’m also looking for new ways to display business content online, with a special emphasis on interactive displays.”
