Utica newspaper cuts stock listings

The Observer-Dispatch in Utica, N.Y., has discontinued full-page listings of stocks and mutual funds that appear daily Tuesday through Saturday. They have been replaced with an expanded list of stocks of local interest, according to an announcement in the Tuesday newspaper.

The paper joins dozens of business sections around the country that have dropped stock listings.

The changes were made because research shows fewer readers are relying on the print editions of the newspaper for securities information, the paper said.

The newspaper previously highlighted a list of 36 stocks of local interest in the print edition. That number has been increased to 156 stocks.

The full-page market recap that appears Saturdays has been discontinued. A listing of the week’s performance for local interest stocks will appear in Sunday’s business section.

Readers have e-mailed in numerous stocks they said they wanted added to the list. Some of the added stocks appear Tuesday. However, because of the programming time it takes to add them, others should appear in Thursday’s print editions.
