University of Memphis seeks professor with biz journalism experience

The University of Memphis is adverting to fill its Hardin Endowed Chair of Excellence and says one of the areas of specialization it will consider is someone who can teach business and economics journalism.

The search committee will begin reviewing applications on Jan. 11.

Here are the details:

The University of Memphis Department of Journalism seeks candidates for the Hardin Endowed Chair of Excellence. This is a full-time position and can be either tenure-track or renewable non-tenure track. Appointment begins August 2010. Women and minorities are encouraged to apply.

Ideal candidates will possess an outstanding record of professional accomplishments, a national reputation, and a commitment to teaching. They should also have demonstrated expertise in at least one of the following:

  • new media, social media, multimedia;
  • entrepreneurialism, publishing, marketing;
  • professional development and outreach;
  • business or economic journalism;
  • strategic communication;
  • traditional journalism skills, including writing, reporting, editing, producing, design and layout, or visual media.

In addition, individuals who are entrepreneurs, innovators or grant winners would be highly desirable. Duties are negotiable depending on candidate’s interests and experience but are normally a combination of teaching and either professional outreach or research. The chair will teach two on-campus courses in the fall and two in the spring and also undertake a professional-outreach project after consultation with the faculty.
