Unemployment was top network TV biz news story in 2010

The unemployment situation in the United States received 216 minutes of coverage by the three major networks, making it the most covered business or economic story of the year, according to a study by the Tyndall Report. In 2009, unemployment received 248 minutes of coverage.

ABC World News covered the topic with 76 minutes, while CBS Evening News devoted 71 minutes and NBC Nightly News gave it 69 minutes.

Toyota’s jammed accelerators received the next highest amount of coverage, with 188 minutes. CBS Evening News covered that topic the most, with 66 minutes, while NBC Nightly News devoted 65 minutes to it.

The networks devoted 120 minutes of coverage in 2010 to the stock market, with CBS Evening News giving it 57 minutes and NBC Nightly News devoting 48 minutes to the topic, while ABC World News gave it just 15 minutes. In 2009, the markets received 165 minutes of coverage.

The real estate foreclosure crisis received 96 minutes of coverage, with ABC World News devoting 37 minutes to the issue.
