Tyrangiel leaving Bloomberg, Businessweek

Bloomberg Businessweek editor Josh Tyrangiel sent out the following announcement to the staff:

Friends,

Tomorrow will be my last day at Bloomberg. I’ve spent six years working with some of the smartest and most creative people in journalism, and it’s time for me to take my chips off the table, reflect on my criminal good luck, and think about what comes next. I leave brimming with memories and gratitude. The list of people to thank is far too long to unfurl in its entirety, but it starts with Mike, who bought Businessweek and imbued a relatively green editor with the fullness of his trust. Matt, Dan, Peter, and Norm saw how the magazine could be a crucial part of Bloomberg’s growth and fought for its ethos long before its success was assured. Justin has been a great partner in the pursuit of innovative media. John has been a total joy to work for. Marty and Reto have been my friends and constant co-conspirators.

Bloomberg is blessed with many advantages, and the greatest by far is its people. My job has allowed me to roam within the company, and behind every Terminal sits someone with unique intelligence and curiosity. Getting to exchange ideas and learn from so many of you in TV, digital, P&I, Politics, Graphics, R&D, BI, and sales has been a total kick. But there’s a special place in my heart for the team at Businessweek. Nothing bonds people like the constant grind of a weekly magazine, and we’re bound even tighter by the experience of having saved one. Kristin, Rob, Tracy, Cindy, Clinton, Howard, Brad, Brad, Bryant, Peter, Paul, Emma, Kurt, Wes, Brian, Bob, Minette, Rachel, Diane—to everyone on the 4th floor: Thank you. I’m so proud of the work you’ve done, and humbled by the way in which you’ve done it. To arrive each day certain that you’ll be surprised by people’s intelligence, and touched by their humor and kindness, is an unbelievable gift.

Lastly, no one waves the flag for great journalism higher (or louder) than Ellen. She’s an inspiration—and the best editor I’ve ever worked with. The magazine would be no good, and no fun, without her.

I’m so happy to have been a part of Bloomberg these last six years, and eager to see what comes in the next six. I’ll be watching, reading, and rooting.

He is the author of the leading business reporting textbook "Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" and "Thinking Things Over," a biography of former Wall Street Journal editor Vermont Royster.
