Transitioning from the sell side to business journalism

Ricardo Kaulessar, the editor of HedgeFundNet.com, writes about Fox Business Network reporter Sandra Smith, who made the transition from Wall Street to journalism.

Kaulessar writes, “Her current career began in the same manner as previous reporters who made the jump from working at a trading desk to anchoring a news desk – being a frequent guest on business news programs.

“However, making the transition from the buy-side to the journalism side came easily for Smith, armed with an appreciation and knowledge of financials nurtured by her father, a longtime Chicago trader (now-retired), as well as several relatives who also worked in Chicago’s financial district.

“That coupled with her post-college work, at broker-dealers Aegis Capital and Terra Nova Institutional and at hedge fund Hermitage Capital, provided her with the extensive financial expertise that she displays daily in her broadcasts from New York or from her hometown.

“‘Watching financial television as a trader, you always wanted the news to speak to you,’ Smith says. ‘I know my goal every day is to talk to an audience that cares about their money, and what is happening in the world and what direction it is going in.’
