Toronto paper names new biz editor

The Globe and Mail on Tuesday named Derek DeCloet editor of the business section, replacing Elena Cherney, who will become the paper’s managing editor.

Caroline Van Hasselt of The Wall Street Journal writes, “The Globe is Canada’s second-largest circulation daily, behind the Toronto Star. It’s majority owned by the Thomson family, whose media empire also includes a big stake in Thomson Reuters PLC. (The Globe and Dow Jones & Co., Inc., the publisher of The Wall Street Journal and Real Time Canada, have a longstanding content-sharing agreement.)

“Mr. DeCloet, an award-winning columnist, had been the ROB’s managing editor since 2009, a role in which he supervised much of the day-to-day running of the section. He will now oversee all business and investing content in print and online, as well as the Report on Business magazine.

“See the paper’s coverage of the announcement by editor-in-chief John Stackhouse here.

“Ms. Cherney, a former Wall Street Journal reporter, takes on the paper’s number-two position, replacing David Walmsley, who is rejoining the Canadian Broadcasting Corp., where he will become director of news content. Also part of the shuffle: Sinclair Stewart, the globe’s national editor, will assume the title of editor, news and sports.”
