Michael de la Merced, a business reporter for The New York Times and its Dealbook website, is moving cross country to work out of its San Francisco bureau.
He starts on the West Coast on Tuesday.
Andrew Ross Sorkin, the New York Times business columnist who founded Dealbook, told Talking Biz News:
He’s going to continue to cover everything he’s done here for DealBook from there, perhaps with an added dose of West Coast news too. He’s one of my early partners in the DealBook franchise and he’s responsible for a HUGE part of its success. He’s one of the most talented people I know. I’ve sat next to him for the last 9 years, so selfishly I’m going to miss seeing him every day, but I’m thrilled for him and what he’s going to be doing for us from the other coast.
De la Merced has covered Wall Street and finance for the Times and Dealbook since April 2006. Among his main coverage areas are mergers and acquisitions, bankruptcy/restructuring, private equity and white-collar crime.
He joined The Times in 2006. A New York native, he earned a bachelor’s degree from Emory University in 2003 and a master’s degree in journalism from New York University in 2005.
