Emily Dreyfuss, editorial director at Protocol, is among the 13 staff members laid off by the company. She writes:

“To say I’m heartbroken would be an understatement. I joined the company with the plan to build something and stay for a very long time.”

Dreyfuss joined Protocol from Wired where she was working as a senior writer. Prior to that, she was a Nieman-Berkman Klein fellow at Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard. She also served as a senior programming manager at CBS Interactive.

Dreyfuss graduated from Wesleyan University with a degree in English.

Managing editor Joanna Pearlstein has also been let go. She joined the media company last year from Wired where she held the post of deputy editor, newsroom standards. She has also worked at Red Herring as a news editor and served as a senior editor at MacWEEK.

Pearlstein is a B.A. in English from Vassar College.

Protocol has also laid off cybersecurity reporter Adam Janofsky. Previously, he was working as a reporter for The Wall Street Journal.

Before that, he was a video journalist at Inc. magazine and he has also interned at Bloomberg covering corporate finance and credit markets. He also served as editor-in-chief at Chicago Maroon.

Janofsky wrote on Twitter:

“When I joined the founding team last year, I was excited about building something to last. I’m heartbroken it got cut short, but grateful that I got to work with so many talented journalists.”

Janofsky holds a bachelor’s degree in political science and law from University of Chicago.
