Thompson stepping back from biz editor role at TheAtlantic.com

Derek Thompson, a senior editor at The Atlantic, where he oversees business coverage for the website, is stepping back from that position after more than two years.

“I’m staying at The Atlantic as a senior editor, but I’m stepping a half-step away from editing to focus more on writing, and so we’re hiring a business editor to take over those day-to-day managing and editing duties,” said Thompson in an email to Talking Biz News.

Thompson has written a business column for the magazine. He frequently appears on radio and television, including NPR and CNBC. He is also an adjunct professor at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, where he teaches a class on writing for the Internet. In 2012, he appeared in FOLIO: magazine’s 15 Under 30, Min’s People to Watch, and Reuters’ Counterparties’ blogs to follow.

Thompson had been mentioned as a successor to Ezra Klein at The Washington Post.

Thompson, who has also written for Slate, BusinessWeek, and the Daily Beast, is a Northwestern graduate.

The business editor position can be found here.
