Mary Hance, who writes the Ms. Cheap column for The Tennessean in Nashville, is retiring from the paper on Jan. 4, 2021.
She was also previously the assistant business editor.
A Tennessean story states, “Her Ms. Cheap column got its start at the Nashville Banner in March 1994, when she realized readers enjoyed her stories about retail and hospitality bargains and asked her editors if she could write a column focused on thrifty ideas. Since then, she has embraced writing about cheap things to do and the creative ways people save money.
“When The Banner closed in 1998, Hance moved to The Tennessean. Her readers loved helping Ms. Cheap — from her Cheapest of the Cheap contest to her T-shirt drive for the homeless — there was no end to the tips and donations she got.
“Hance’s 12th annual Penny Drive for Second Harvest Food Bank is under way to fight hunger in our region. During its first 11 years, Hance through the Penny Drive raised more than $715,000.”
