The Daily’s closure means biz journalists losing jobs

News Corp.’s decision to shutter The Daily, its iPad-only newspaper, on Dec. 15 means the loss of jobs for a group of business journalists working at the publication.

The business editor is Tom Lowry, who previously worked at BusinessWeek and Variety.

“We all know nothing is a sure thing in media these days,” said Lowry in an email to Talking Biz News. “The opportunity to be out front with this powerful new platform leaves us with no regrets. My team was small but we were able to leverage the technology and do some incredible work. The strategies we deployed in the app every day will eventually be part of the thinking for every business editor and reporter.”

On his team was Kyle Stock, who previously was a business journalist at The Wall Street Journal and The Charleston (S.C.) Post and Courier and is a graduate of Northwestern and Columbia universities.

Paul Davies was a columnist for the business section on a contract basis. He also formerly worked at The Journal and is also a Columbia grad.

Tom Anderson, another Columbia grad, wrote a weekly stocks picks column for The Daily. And Tal Yellin was the designer for the section.

Chris Roush

Chris Roush was the dean of the School of Communications at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut. He was previously Walter E. Hussman Sr. Distinguished Professor in business journalism at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is a former business journalist for Bloomberg News, Businessweek, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Tampa Tribune and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He is the author of the leading business reporting textbook "Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" and "Thinking Things Over," a biography of former Wall Street Journal editor Vermont Royster.
