Tett named U.S. ME for Financial Times

The Financial Times announced Monday the appointment of Gillian Tett as U.S. managing editor, overseeing the FT’s print and online editions in the region.

Tett, currently assistant editor responsible for the FT’s markets coverage, will take up her new role with immediate effect. She will move to New York full-time on Sept. 1

“Gillian’s award-winning coverage of the global financial crisis has been recognized around the world,” said editor Lionel Barber in a statement. “Having led the markets team from London, and with a wealth of global experience, she is ideally placed to lead the next phase of the FT’s editorial development in the US.  She will play an important ambassadorial role in the region and strengthen our growing influence in the North American market.”

Tett joined the Financial Times in 1993 and has served as its capital markets editor, deputy editor of the Lex column, Tokyo bureau chief, Tokyo correspondent, London-based economics reporter and a reporter in Russia and Brussels. She has a PhD in social anthropology from Cambridge University.

Tett was named Journalist of the Year (2009) and Business Journalist of the Year (2008) by the British Press Awards and Senior Financial Journalist of the Year (2007) by the Wincott Awards.

Tett succeeds Chrystia Freeland, who will leave the company to take a role at Thomson Reuters.

“Chrystia has been a driving force behind the FT’s success in the U.S. for the past four years, and has contributed to the FT’s global profile in many other senior roles in London and Moscow,” said Barber. “I wish her the very best with her future endeavors.”
