Tennessee newspaper cuts standalone business section

The Jackson Sun newspaper in Tennessee is cutting its standalone business section, writes executive editor Steve Coffman in the Sunday paper.

It’s the fifth Gannett newspaper this year to cut its standalone business section to save on costs.

Coffman writes, “Beginning Tuesday, our business coverage will be condensed to one page — one-half page of news briefs and stories and one-half page of market information. We will no longer have a full-page listing of stocks Mondays through Saturdays or a nearly full page of mutual fund listings on Saturdays.

“The daily stock listings will include about 70 stocks of local interest, the 100 largest mutual funds, agricultural commodity prices and recaps of the major stock market indexes. If the stock or mutual fund listing you’re looking for isn’t included, you may look it up any time at jacksonsun.com/business. Many papers across the country have eliminated or dramatically reduced their stock listings because that information is easy to find on the Internet.

“The business page will be inside the A section on Tuesdays but will remain on the back of the B section Wednesdays through Sundays.”
