Tech reporter Giles returning to journalism

Martin Giles

Martin Giles, who was Silicon Valley correspondent for The Economist before joining a venture capital firm in early 2015, is returning to business journalism.

Giles has been hired as the San Francisco bureau chief of the MIT Technology Review. “Thrilled to be working with another terrific team, and looking forward to exploring a wide range of technologies and their impact on business and society,” he wrote on LinkedIn.

He starts his new job in November.

Giles joined The Economist as a finance correspondent in 1988. He then moved to Paris as the newspaper’s European business correspondent, before returning to London as finance editor.

Giles subsequently spent several years on the business side of The Economist Group, including as managing director of the group’s U.S. operations. During this time he earned an executive MBA from The University of Chicago’s Booth Graduate School of Business.

In 2008 he returned to the editorial staff of The Economist, becoming the newspaper’s management correspondent in New York. From 2009 to 2015, he had been the U.S. technology correspondent in San Francisco.
