We’re very happy to tell you that Kara Swisher will begin writing for us as a contributor later this summer. As you probably know, from Kara’s work on conferences or her podcasts or her many columns and books, no more knowledgeable or fearless journalist covers the tech industry. The power and influence of the tech companies is among the most important and complex stories of our era, and we are very excited at the prospect of having Kara bring her experience, intellect and courage to bear for Times readers, to identify and explain the big ideas in technology and, when needed, to call the companies, the regulators and our political leaders to account.
There is no major tech figure of the last quarter century whom Kara hasn’t grilled, no big story she hasn’t covered, often ahead of everyone else. Kara started at The Washington Post, where she chronicled the dawn of the Internet age in the early 1990s. She wrote two books on AOL that introduced readers to the emerging players before they became giants. She eventually moved to The Wall Street Journal, where she created and wrote the Boom Town column to track the breakneck development of Silicon Valley. In 2003, she and her colleague Walt Mossberg created the All Things Digital tech conference, which became the gold standard for live journalism. They also led a team of reporters to pick apart the tech industry at AllThingsD.com, on The Journal’s platform. She and Walt later left The Journal to create the Recode site and the Code conference, which became part of Vox Media.
Kara will remain at Vox Media as the editor at large of Recode, where she will continue writing and hosting the “Recode Decode” podcast. She will also continue to co-chair the Code Conference. She will begin writing regularly for The Times in August, and we’ll ask you to join us in welcoming her then.”
