Stoll named WSJ’s business columnist

Wall Street Journal editor in chief Gerard Baker sent out the following announcement on Wednesday:

I’m delighted to announce that John Stoll is appointed to a new role as the Wall Street Journal’s business columnist. John will write a weekly column in our upcoming revised Saturday business section, and contribute periodically at other times of the week, deploying his reporting and analysis to illuminate the biggest stories in business.

Having reported from two continents, John has been one of the Journal’s most accomplished and insightful business journalists. He joined Dow Jones in 2005 as a reporter for Newswires, covering Detroit’s Big 3, auto suppliers and the rest of the U.S. car business. He joined the Detroit bureau’s Wall Street Journal staff in 2007, narrowing his focus to General Motors as the No.1 American auto maker headed toward bankruptcy court.

In 2010, John left the WSJ and joined Ford Motor Co. in financial communications. He returned to journalism in 2011 to work for Reuters in Detroit, and in 2012 finally relented and came back to the Journal as bureau chief in Stockholm, overseeing coverage in the Nordic and Baltic regions. He took a brief break from that job to cover the appointment of Pope Francis during the 2013 conclave in Rome. He moved back to Detroit in 2014, as global automotive editor. In his new position, John will report to both Emily Gitter, editor of the new section, and Jamie Heller, business editor.

Before joining Dow Jones, John worked as a reporter for Wards Automotive, AutoWeek magazine, Automotive News and Agence France Presse. He is a graduate of Oakland University in Rochester, Mich., and lives in Rochester with his wife, Kimberly, four children and the family goldendoodle.

Chris Roush was the dean of the School of Communications at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut. He was previously Walter E. Hussman Sr. Distinguished Professor in business journalism at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is a former business journalist for Bloomberg News, Businessweek, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Tampa Tribune and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He is the author of the leading business reporting textbook "Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" and "Thinking Things Over," a biography of former Wall Street Journal editor Vermont Royster.
